THE SCOOP ON GROW BY THREE

Boston Bar Association: DEI Roundtable Event

On June 6, 2023, our Founder will be co-leading a discussion about how principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) can affect professional experiences in the legal field, and ways that leaders in Boston’s legal community can further perpetuate equitable opportunities for lawyers from underrepresented backgrounds.

This event is intended for law students and junior-level practitioners (~1-5 years in the profession). Law students and junior-level practitioners in any practice area, from any organization in the legal community (e.g., law schools, law firms, public interest entities, corporations, etc.) are welcome to attend. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

GBT x TPC

In December 2023, Grow By Three sponsored an intimate virtual workshop for The Philanthropy Connection (TPC), a collective giving women’s organization that provides grants to extraordinary nonprofits in the Greater Boston area.

This interactive session helped participants apply diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles through discussion about case studies specifically designed for TPC. Topics covered included bias, allyship, and cultural competence, and discussions provided space for members to share how they would react in scenarios or navigate difficult or uncomfortable conversations. Members also discussed how TPC can continue to foster DEI through its volunteer activities and committees.

STOP AAPI HATE

May 1, 2021 marked the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! As we all remember and celebrate the contributions that the AAPI community has made to the United States, we must also take note of the increase of violence against this group throughout the pandemic.

Words helped to promote stereotypes and xenophobic labels after 9/11, and last year, they took on a similar character. As COVID-19 spread across our nation, we also saw the spread of associations between a deadly pandemic and numerous Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) populations. These associations have laid a hostile foundation for increased harassment, discrimination, and violence against AAPI communities in ways that must be condemned and stopped.

It is easy to argue that words are meaningless when we want to avoid the impact that words can have, and it is especially easy for those who make problematic statements to implore everyone to “stop being so sensitive.” To be clear: opposition to racism never equates to “sensitivity.” Opposition to racism is a crucial component in establishing greater equity and inclusion within our society.

As we stand in solidarity with Asian communities far and wide, we will not stand quietly. We will use our voices, and resources, to amplify the needs of diverse groups as loudly as we can. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said – “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

--------------------------------

While we understand that discrimination against the Asian community is not new, we recognize that there is a large segment of the population that is unaware of its depth within American history. Some of our workshops focus on historical analyses of diverse populations in America, and we consistently receive feedback that many participants have learned something completely new. We encourage readers to review some of the links below to explore the historical, and current impact, of racism in connection with the Asian American experience.

Many people may feel that because they do not identify as being diverse in certain ways, that DEI-related issues do not apply to them. We share why that notion is incorrect on the podcast!
